Boost CPD Points: Practical Law’s Top Picks from Thomson Reuters’ Webinars

31 March 2020 is an important day for the legal profession. It is the last day of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) year in many States and Territories; the day where many legal professionals diligently try to remember all of the training and professional development sessions they have attended over the past 12 months and how many CPD points they have managed to accumulate for their educational endeavours. And with the 31 March deadline fast approaching, there are now only a few weeks left to earn those last couple of points.

With their own practising certificates to maintain, the Practical Law team at Thomson Reuters Australia understand what it is like to need to get those last few CPD points in a limited amount of time. We know that it has been a busy 12 months for you, and that you have barely had time to sleep let alone attend external training sessions.

The Practical Law team’s mission is to help its customers in all aspects of their legal work, including by providing our customers with helpful, interesting and potentially CPD point earning knowledge resources. To that end, we have collated a set of our favourite Thomson Reuters webinars, each of which has been presented by our expert Practical Law team members (with help from our friends and colleagues in private practice and in-house teams) over the past 12 months. Plus, if you hold a current practising certificate and after listening consider any of these webinar materials to be relevant to your practice, you may be eligible to claim points (or parts of points) towards your CPD requirements. Please check any specific CPD requirements that apply in your state or territory. You can learn more about them below and find a link to access them right now or at a time most convenient to you.

“The best thing about these webinars? As a Legal Insight reader, existing or new, you can access and view them all at absolutely no cost (other than your time, of course)”

– Justin Sprogis, Senior Writer, Practical Law

The webinars that the Practical Law team has collated cover a range of legal topics, from The Future of Legal Professional Privilege, to Legal Market Trends and 2020 Outlook, to the global impact of Australia’s introduction of modern slavery laws with Modern Slavery and Going Beyond Compliance. These resources are all available online, making them easily accessible from work or from home, and on a range of devices.

The Future of Legal Professional Privilege

The recent High Court case of Glencore v The Commissioner of Taxation [2019] HCA 26 has attracted attention from both law firms and corporate legal counsels.

In a Practical Law webinar on this case, Tyrilly Csillag, Head of In-House at Practical Law Australia, said that the outcome of the Glencore case reminds legal counsel about the limitations of legal professional privilege (LPP) and the need to comprehensively understand an organisation’s cybersecurity stance.

“Understanding definitively now that our client’s privilege will not operate as a ‘sword’, in-house lawyers need to revisit their map of where the organisation’s privileged information is physically held and digitally stored, and by whom, and then reassess the security measures that protect that information”

– Tyrilly Csillag, Head of In-House at Practical Law

Laura Hawes, Head of Dispute Resolution at Practical Law Australia provides a refresher on the fundamental principles underpinning LPP, a clear understanding of which remains critical for practitioners (both in private practice and in-house), notwithstanding the High Court’s decision in Glencore.

The webinar also features expert commentary from Chris Drummer, Director, Projects and Advocacy, APAC, Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) and Matt Mackenzie, Partner, Disputes + Investigations, Gilbert + Tobin.

Modern Slavery and Going Beyond Compliance

In his informative, practical, and engaging webinar on the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth), Michael Milnes, Head of Commercial Law at Practical Law Australia, asks whether businesses ought to take a more holistic approach to the Act by going beyond basic compliance.

“Organisations are busy getting to grips with the requirements of complying with the new Modern Slavery Act, but in an era where companies have to consider higher standards of community expectations, will compliance be enough? Lawyers are well positioned to help guide their clients or organisations through these issues. In this webinar we look at some of the practical strategies that companies are taking to protect their supply chains, leaving you with plenty of ideas to take away”, said Michael.

Michael’s insights and knowledge of the Act and its practical implications make this webinar a must-listen for all practitioners or organisations that are impacted by this Act or who want to learn more about it from an expert in the area.
