With the rise of the flexible office, how many law firms are now operating as a virtual one?<\/p>\n<p>In a <a title=\"Lack of time and challenges of attracting the right talent holding law firms back from true excellence\" href=\"http:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/australian-law-firms-best-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2014 survey of legal professionals conducted by Thomson Reuters<\/a>, an overwhelming 69 per cent of respondents said that the pace of innovation is faster today than it was 10 years ago. Rapid advancements in technology and communication devices have accelerated the growth of a mobile workforce.<\/p>\n<p>As more and more employees look for flexible teleworking practices, and clients demand more for less, practitioners now need to look at offering adaptable practices while also ensuring that they offer a consistent, high-quality service to their clients.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><b>The vanishing office<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Technological advancements such as smartphones, tablets and Wi-Fi have increased connectivity and led to greater flexibility in the legal workforce. Many <a title=\"Electronic documents\u2026 can law offices go paperless?\" href=\"http:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/electronic-documents-can-law-office-go-paperless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lawyers now file reports electronically<\/a>, store documents in the cloud and conduct online dispute resolution, teleconferences and virtual meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Does this online revolution mean that the physical law firm could become a thing of the past? Approximately 38 per cent of the survey respondents believed that 25 per cent of firms will operate completely virtually by 2044, with no office at all. Almost 60 per cent said that at least half of their employees would be working remotely by this time.<\/p>\n<p>Around 43 per cent of those surveyed also reported that their existing physical <a title=\"The Future of Law: disappearing legal libraries and virtual firms?! (Infographic)\" href=\"http:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/resources\/resource\/future-law-legal-libraries-virtual-firms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">legal library will \u201cvirtually disappear\u201d by 2044<\/a> because of the increase in digital and online information sources. Could it be that the well-worn Commonwealth Law Reports are destined for a gloomy end?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><b>The benefits<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The appeal of staff working remotely seems evident. A mobile workforce can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reduce absenteeism<\/li>\n<li>increase productivity<\/li>\n<li>enhance <a title=\"Five tips to ensure employee retention of your best staff!\" href=\"http:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/five-tips-ensure-employee-retention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">staff loyalty and retention<\/a><\/li>\n<li>boost <a title=\"Blurred lines: How to find a work life balance\" href=\"http:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/blurred-lines-find-work-life-balance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">employee work life balance<\/a> and health and happiness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Virtual offices could also <a title=\"Benefits of a mobile workforce\" href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/DeskStream\/benefits-of-a-mobile-workforce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">save your firm valuable time and money<\/a> by reducing infrastructure costs such as office space and parking, and resources such as paper and energy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><b>Making it work<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the US, Rachel Rodgers, founder of Rachel Rodgers Law Office, recommends a <a title=\"Setting up a successful virtual law firm\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/yec\/2012\/12\/11\/you-dont-have-to-quit-lawyering-to-have-a-life-5-steps-to-a-virtual-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">five-step process for setting up a successful virtual law firm<\/a>. These include choosing a unique niche in market, developing a menu of services and corresponding fee schedules, and automating key processes such as scheduling and billing.<\/p>\n<p>Virtual law firm, Hive Legal, winners of this years <a title=\"2014 ALPMA\/Telstra Thought Leadership Award\" href=\"https:\/\/alpma.worldsecuresystems.com\/Summit\/thought_leadership_awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2014 ALPMA\/Telstra Thought Leadership Award<\/a> have also created a successful virtual law firm, based here in Australia. Jodie Baker, Managing Director for the firm comments, &#8220;We started with a clean slate and re-imagined the provision of legal services to better connect with the real needs of clients&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Other ways to stay competitive include <a title=\"Law firm marketing\" href=\"http:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/five-of-your-best-law-firm-marketing-tactics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">developing strong marketing<\/a> and branding processes, and looking carefully at how to streamline sales and new business processes. Talent is also a big driver for success, so rather than relying on traditional staffing models, virtual firms need to <a title=\"Five tips to ensure employee retention of your best staff!\" href=\"http:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/five-tips-ensure-employee-retention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">attract top people<\/a> with the right pay and conditions in a competitive online marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>The overall message for small to mid-sized firms is to think big and think differently. By at least partly mobilising your workforce and moving into the virtual realm, you\u2019ll be ready to meet the needs of clients wherever they are, and primed to attract the business of a much wider online market.
