{"id":12007,"date":"2026-05-04T10:21:54","date_gmt":"2026-05-03T23:21:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/legal\/?p=12007"},"modified":"2026-05-04T10:33:48","modified_gmt":"2026-05-03T23:33:48","slug":"legal-research-is-more-than-just-answers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/legal\/posts\/legal-research-is-more-than-just-answers","title":{"rendered":"Legal research is more than just answers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI has changed how quickly lawyers can do what they do everyday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But courts, clients, and regulators are making something else clear: <strong>speed alone isn\u2019t the standard anymore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Tej Kadiyala, AI Strategy Lead for Westlaw ANZ, put it during our recent webinar, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomsonreuters.com.au\/en-au\/events\/webinar-westlaw-advantage-ai-powered-legal-research.html?cid=7789488&amp;chl=eb&amp;sfdccampaignid=701PA00000fpcVDYAY\">Beyond answers: a new way to do legal research<\/a>, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAI has undeniably accelerated our output. But simply getting an AI\u2011generated response isn\u2019t enough anymore. When the reasoning behind that response is hidden, the time you save generating it is often lost trying to verify it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This tension \u2013 between speed and confidence \u2013 is at the centre of legal research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Output without traceability is the new risk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General\u2011purpose AI tools can produce polished, confident responses in seconds. The problem is what can happen next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When reasoning is hidden, lawyers lose time trying to validate the output. Worse, subtle errors in jurisdiction, context, or interpretation can slip through undetected. For in\u2011house counsel, that can mean business decisions are made on unverified reasoning. In firms, it can become professional and reputational exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expectations may have changed, but defensible research hasn\u2019t.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fundamentals still matter: accuracy, currency, completeness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expectation now is that you can <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/legal\/posts\/westlaw-advantage-australia-more-than-an-ai-upgrade\">show the work<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>where the sources came from<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how the reasoning was applied<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>what assumptions were made<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>what the research does <em>not<\/em> cover<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fedcourt.gov.au\/law-and-practice\/practice-documents\/practice-notes\/gpn-ai#_ftn7\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.fedcourt.gov.au\/law-and-practice\/practice-documents\/practice-notes\/gpn-ai#_ftn7\">Courts are explicit about this.<\/a> Transparency around AI use and accountability for outcomes are now table stakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomsonreuters.com.au\/en-au\/events\/webinar-westlaw-advantage-ai-powered-legal-research.html?cid=7789488&amp;chl=eb&amp;sfdccampaignid=701PA00000fpcVDYAY\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/legal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2026\/04\/Insights_900x150_Webinar.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12010\" srcset=\"https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/legal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2026\/04\/Insights_900x150_Webinar.png 900w, https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/legal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2026\/04\/Insights_900x150_Webinar-300x50.png 300w, https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/legal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2026\/04\/Insights_900x150_Webinar-768x128.png 768w, https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/legal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2026\/04\/Insights_900x150_Webinar-740x123.png 740w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From answers to accountability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James Jarvis, VP of Westlaw Product Management, described why this shift is happening,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe way people have been working is a compromise. It is deficient and it is broken. That\u2019s why we\u2019re seeing reactions from courts and law firms \u2013 it goes back to the fundamentals of how legal work gets done.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legal research isn\u2019t linear. It\u2019s multi\u2011step, contextual, and nuanced. Tools that collapse that complexity into a single answer force lawyers to spend extra time reconstructing the reasoning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One shift, two very different pressures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the challenge is universal, the stakes differ depending on where you sit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>In\u2011house teams<\/strong> need fast, accurate answers they can pass directly to the business \u2013 often across jurisdictions, often under time pressure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Law firms<\/strong> need research that can withstand scrutiny from partners, clients, courts, and regulators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The takeaway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI doesn\u2019t lower the bar for legal work.
